ASW Teams with Race Across America The Autism Society of Washington is participating in a fundraiser with Team Laughing Dog Brewing (TLDB) of Sandpoint Idaho as they compete in the 30th annual Race Across America (RAAM) in June of 2011. RAAM is an annual 3000+ mile ultra-endurance non-stop bicycle race with 170,000+ vertical feet of climbing. The race starts in Oceanside California and finishes in Annapolis Maryland. Team Laughing Dog Brewing is participating in order to raise funds to help families dealing with autism in rural communities such as Sandpoint. They have set a goal to raise $1 million to support autism. 100% of net funds raised will go to participating autism organizations, primarily local Autism Society chapters. Please support this effort! You can follow along at the Team Laughing Dog Brewing Facebook page. http://www.facebook.com/teamlaughingdog Welcome New Board Member In January, ASW appointed a new state board member, Jeffrey Foster from Vancouver, WA. Research Opportunity for Infants who have an Older Sibling with an Autism Spectrum Disorder Name of Studies: Early Detection Study and Social Development Study Eligibility Criteria: Infants between 5 and 30 months of age who have an older sibling with an autism spectrum disorder Principal Investigator: Dr. Wendy Stone Contact Information: Research Coordinator: 877-408-8922 or email: uwautism@uw.edu. Researchers at the University of Washington Autism Center in Seattle are conducting the Early Detection and Social Development studies in order to learn more about how the early social development of infants at risk for autism spectrum disorders differs from that of infants not at risk. We hope to use this information to design methods of early identification, intervention and prevention of autism spectrum disorders. Parents will be asked to fill out questionnaires about their child’s behavior. Infants may also receive assessments of their social and communication behavior at certain visits up to 36 months of age. Families eligible for the Early Detection Study may come to the University of Washington for 0 to 2 visits and may receive up to $215 for their time and expense. Families eligible for the Social Development Study may come to the University of Washington for 7 to 9 visits and may receive up to $675 for their time and expense. Eligible families may participate in one or both studies. These studies are funded by the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development. For more information, please contact our Research Coordinator at 877-408-8922 or email us at uwautism@uw.edu.
