Introductory Comments from ASW
By Patty Gee, M.Ed SLP, ASW President’s Message – February 2008

Our Governor, Christine Gregoire, has prepared a Proclamation that will be read at the Olympia Autism Awareness Rally, Thursday Feb. 27th in the Capitol Rotunda scheduled from 12:00  noon to 1:00.    We encourage families to attend to help put a ‘Face on Autism.’   The rally is sponsored by the Autism Society of Washington.
A representative from Governor Gregoire’s office will read the proclamation, and legislators are scheduled to speak.
The Proclamation in part includes the following:
WHEREAS, autism is a developmental disability in which there is no known cure, although with aggressive and constant therapy, some individuals can develop sufficient skills to become production members of society, and
WHEREAS, autism can have a devastating impact on families of those individuals who are affected, and
WHEREAS, through research, legislation, training, programs, support groups, advocacy and increased awareness, we will be empowered and ready to met the challenges to serve the growing population of individuals with autism.

Also that day, Representative Dan Roach will read a House Resolution at 10:00 in the House Chamber.   You are invited to come to the Capitol early and also hear the resolution read to your representative.   This would also be an opportunity to leave a message for your legislators or perhaps speak personally to them about the challenges you face living with autism.
For more information, call me….   Patty Gee at 360-556-8151.

3rd Annual Exceptional Children's Art Day
Saturday May 17, 2008, 10:30am-12:00pm
Tacoma Art Museum.

This year's event will include children 3-8 years old. Just as last year, participation in the event is FREE and includes same-day museum admission, refreshments, and a take-home "goody bag" for your child.  Siblings are welcome this year.  Please remember to sign them up as well.
The goal of Art Day is to provide a fun day of art and exploration to children with special needs in a barrier-free environment. The children are encouraged to be creative through adapted art projects and the use of adapted tools.
This year’s facilitator is Shariana Mundi. Mundi has a Masters of Art in Whole Systems Design with an academic focus in Educational Transformation and certification in Expressive Arts Therapy. She has worked with children, the arts and people with "alternative" abilities for over half a century and still thrills in awe at the ever-emerging vital creativity expressed through art! Shariana served as the Arts in Education director of school artist residencies, parent/teacher trainings, inclusive art festivals, and community and adaptive arts programming statewide. She helped establish and teaches growing visual art programs in Kent and Burien which include quarterly artist receptions, student solo exhibits, public art making and exhibits, and sales of student art work. She has also taught rhythm and movement as well as Jabberwocky Jungle Theatre which culminates annually with a stage production… or most recently, a movie! Shariana believes that each human being has a gift to give their world and needs myriad avenues and opportunities for creative expression and colorful contribution to enrich their community.

Western Washington TACA
CALIFORNIA NON-PROFIT 'TACA' LAUNCHES WESTERN WASHINGTON CHAPTER TO SUPPORT FAMILIES AFFECTED BY AUTISM

WASHINGTON - FEBRUARY 10, 2008 - California based Talk About Curing Autism (TACA) - whose spokesperson Jenny McCarthy brought national attention to emerging treatment options to the disease last fall with the release of her book, Louder Than Words: A Mother's Journey in Healing Autism - has launched a national help initiative to strengthen the autism community by connecting families and the professionals who can help them. Western Washington State is selected as home to one of TACA's first new chapters.
TACA Washington Events Start in March
TACA Washington plans to offer an information booth at the upcoming Brighter Tomorrows Northwest Regional Special Needs Conference Hosted by The Wyatt Holliday Foundation, March 7-8 at the Norman Worthington Conference Center, Saint Martin's University; 5300 Pacific Ave. SE in Lacey.

The first Western Washington TACA Meeting is set for 10 a.m. Saturday, March
15 in the Building E Auditorium at the South Campus of Bates Technical College, 2201 South 78th Street in Tacoma. The agenda includes an introduction to the support and mentoring services TACA offers and a discussion of emerging treatment options for individuals with autism. The next meeting is set for King County in mid-April with the location to be announced.

Western Washington Selected for National Rollout
TACA aims to achieve earlier autism diagnosis and to close the gap between initial diagnosis and access to effective treatments. Despite efforts of regional university treatment centers and pediatric hospitals - whose leadership has pointed out the profound positive impact early intervention can have - appropriate early assessments and prompt initiation of effective treatments remain elusive for many children.

TACA's Help Initiative is fueled by emerging evidence that the underlying symptoms of autism also show up in the digestive and immune systems. "We are here to try and help fill in some gaps, and support the existing organizations when it is appropriate," said
Western Washington State Co-Coordinator Ricci King of Seattle, parent of a 15-year-old with autism. "Washington was selected for a TACA Chapter based upon the lack of resources available to families - particularly those with younger children."

King, Co-Coordinators Dean and Denise Fulton of Olympia, and appointed parent helpers are offering monthly meetings at alternating locations in Pierce and King Counties to provide access to as many Puget Sound Families as possible. TACA accepted chapter applications in 2007 and announced its selections last December.

How TACA Helps Families
TACA does not charge admission to the meetings, nor does it assess annual membership fees for families it supports. Meetings will feature:
Free TACA Journey Guides - more than 300 pages of collective knowledge gathered from experienced paraprofessionals and parents - are offered free to all parents who attend meetings.
Speakers on topics ranging from traditional therapies, integrated medical treatments, education, and legal support.
Mentoring support - offering one-on-one access to experienced families who have successfully navigated the challenges of finding appropriate treatments and educational opportunities for their children is also facilitated with oversight from TACA's National Headquarters.
About TACA
Talk About Curing Autism (TACA) provides information, resources, and support to families affected by autism. For families who have just received the autism diagnosis, TACA aims to speed up the cycle time from the autism diagnosis to effective treatments. TACA helps to strengthen the autism community by connecting families and the professionals who can help them, allowing them to share stories and information to help people with autism be the best they can be. TACA's spokesperson is actress, comedian, model, mother, and author of three NY Times bestsellers, Jenny McCarthy.

Press Release
January 10, 2008
Autism Risk Higher in People with Gene Variant
Difference in Gene Appears to Pose More Risk When Inherited from Mothers
Scientists have found a variation in a gene that may raise the risk of developing autism, especially when the variant is inherited from mothers rather than fathers.  The research was funded by the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), part of the National Institutes of Health.
Inheriting the gene variant does not mean that a child will inevitably develop autism.  It means that a child may be more vulnerable to developing the disease than are children without the variation.
The gene, CNTNAP2, makes a protein that enables brain cells to communicate with each other through chemical signals and appears to play a role in brain cell development.  Previous studies have implicated the gene in autism, and in this study researchers were able to link a specific variation in its structure to the disease.
